| How to Sell your Vehicle in Woodbury County |

What you need to know BEFORE you advertise your vehicle or trade / sell
to a vehicle dealer to avoid problems between you and the buyer.
SELLING/TRADING YOUR VEHICLE TO A DEALER
1. At dealer, remove the license plates. If you buy another
vehicle within 30 days, you can put the plates on that vehicle,
providing you pay the fees on the replacement vehicle. You may also be
entitled to a credit for the unused registration fee on your old vehicle
if you apply within 30 days of sale. To receive this credit, complete
the reverse side of the registration receipt and turn it in with your
application for title on your replacement vehicle. Transfer the plates
from the vehicle you sold to the replacement vehicle after titling your
replacement vehicle.
If no replacement vehicle is purchased, turn your plates in to the
Woodbury County Treasurer's Office. You may be entitled to a refund of
your unused registration fees with a refund claim (obtained from the
County Treasurer's Office) if the remaining amount is greater than $10
and you turn in the registration receipt (completed on the reverse
side). This must be done within six months of the sale date. Dealers are
very helpful with the necessary paperwork.
2. Complete top section on back of title and give it to the
dealer .
3. Tell the dealer the county where your vehicle was last
registered and the date your license plates expire.
4. Complete an odometer statement and damage disclosure statement
(only on vehicles nine model years or newer) and give them to the
dealer.
5. If you are purchasing a replacement vehicle from the dealer of
you have sold your vehicle within the last 30 days, give the dealer your
registration receipt. If you are not purchasing a replacement vehicle
from the dealer, keep the registration receipt.
SELLING/TRADING YOUR VEHICLE TO ANOTHER INDIVIDUAL
1. REMOVE THE LICENCE PLATES AND KEEP THEM.
If the person buying your vehicle is an Iowa resident, give the buyer:
2. On vehicles nine model years or newer the completed odometer
(on back of title) and damage disclosure statements (you may need a
separate statement if the statement on back of the title does not say,
"This motor vehicle was previously titled as 'salvage', 'rebuilt', of
'flood', in this state or any other state.") These statements are
available at the Woodbury County Treasurer's Office as well as on this
website (Click the "forms" link to the left to download any necessary
forms).
3. The Certificate of Title (with assignment filled out on the
back).
4. The name of county where your vehicle was last registered and
the date of your license plates expire.
5. A Bill of Sale (on back of handout). If possible (if the buyer
is a Woodbury County resident), go with tile buyer to the Woodbury
County Treasurer's Office to complete the title transfer. If you are
unable to go, use the receipt on this handout which state that the
person has bought the vehicle and accepted delivery of the vehicle and
title.
If the buyer does not have plates to put on the vehicle, the buyer
can use it for 15 days if the vehicle is currently registered and as
long as either the bill of sale (describing the vehicle and signed by
the seller and buyer) or title assigned to the buyer, or photocopy of
both sides of the title is carried in the vehicle. It is recommended
that the buyer go to the County Treasurer's Office to get plates to
avoid being stopped by a police officer to check ownership documents.
A vehicle that is not currently registered cannot legally be operated on
the road until registration fees are paid.
If the buyer is from another state, after removing your license plates,
give the buyer:
1. On vehicles nine model years or newer your completed odometer
and damage disclosure statements; and
2. Certificate of Title with the completed assignment portion.
If the out-of-state buyer does not have valid plates for the vehicle,
but your vehicle is currently registered, the Woodbury County Treasurer
may issue a 30-day transit plate for $3.
3. A Bill of Sale and Receipt of Sale.
IF YOU SELL YOUR VEHICLE FOR JUNK AND IT WILL NEVER BE DRIVEN
AGAIN
1. Give the buyer your title (back section completed.)
2. Get a receipt stating the buyer has accepted delivery of the
vehicle and title, or you can take your title, registration receipt, and
license plates to the Woodbury County Treasurer and give a junking
certificate to the buyer.
NOTE:
At the time of transfer, the buyer(s) drivers license and social
security number(s) and complete birth date(s) are required information.
